Ed+Med Conference 2010

Join us March 3 - 4, 2010 for the Ed+Med Conference. The Ed+Med Conference is brought to you by the collaborative efforts of educators and medical professionals in Bend Oregon area. This year we will be exploring the journey from childhood and transition to adulthood.

Our Mission

Children with special needs face the challenge of reaching their potential across educational and medical or biological domains. Their success relies on partnerships between families, teachers and health care professionals and community partners to coordinate and plan care with family members to assure all factors impacting progress are addressed. Unfortunately, many communities experience a gap between education and health care. In a time where chronic illnesses are increasing in children at alarming rates, this gap must close. This conference has the mission of bringing together health care professionals and educators to network, problem solve, collaborate and coordinate care for children and youth with special needs.

Conference Objectives

At the conclusion of this conference the participants will:

  1. Understand overlapping interest in the care of youth between health care professionals and educators.
  2. Understand social capital and the impact of this on successful transition to adulthood for youth with special needs.
  3. Problem-solve barriers to effective collaboration between health care, community services, families, and educational services for young adults transitioning to adult living.
  4. Identify risk factors that affect health and adult transitional success impacting youth today, including social capital, risky sexual relationships, and poor and uncoordinated transition to adult services.
  5. Identify current approaches to reducing or treating high risk conditions, including changing systems, and growing partnerships.
  6. Make a plan to develop:
    1. A community plan to begin problem solving and reducing barriers facing health
care professionals, community partners, families, and educators when providing
care to youth in their community.
    2. Create an on-going working team to identify, study, implement, and evaluate
partnerships between health care professionals and educators to improve the
health care and education of youth with special needs.
